Unsolved 1982 Montreal treasure hunt

Hi all -

I've been researching an old unsolved treasure-hunt from 1982 called "The Secret" by Byron Preiss (paperback). There's a theory that there's a unique decorated ceramic box buried somewhere in Montreal, and I have an idea it might be in Percy Walters Park. I'm in the UK, but I was hoping to contact someone local who might be interested in trying to find it.

Byron buried twelve of these around the US and Canada , but only two were ever recovered. There used to be a jewel prize for finding them, though he's not around any more so there's just the box. It would be an intruiging souvenir for whoever found it though. (They were made by the New York sculptress JoEllen Trilling.)

I've put together some notes on this puzzle here:

Anyone want to try digging a 3ft hole next to that sign...? :-)

Ben

Re: Unsolved 1982 Montreal treasure hunt

With all the new overpasses being built, the now historic sites etc, the may be much lesser chances of finding it IF there is one on Montreal.

No takers then...? Just means probing the ground at a very specific and undisturbed spot.

Re: Unsolved 1982 Montreal treasure hunt

...no, though Sly had a pretty good look. (Drop me an email if you'd like an update on the search - contact details in the PDF above.)

Here's an article about the last time one of these was discovered, back in 2004.

Re: Unsolved 1982 Montreal treasure hunt

Hi MarcoPolo - perhaps the website was offline when you tried, but the link still works.

Here is the image...

...and this is the match with the Mount Stephen Club in Rue Drummond that draws attention to Montreal...

http://thesecret.pbworks.com/f/9_dogleg.jpg

The image goes with one of the verses here...

http://thesecret.pbworks.com/w/page/22148588/Verses

No-one is certain which one, though I'm pretty sure its No. 2.

Here's another curious link from the book to Montreal - this 1881 sign on the Gare Windsor.

From the verse..."Only three stand watch."

Watchdogs...? The park has three gates with these signs...

Re: "in the middle of 21", I think there may be 21 of these fence panels along the Redpath side...

There is a curious picture in the image that no-one has ever been able to identify, probably somewhere in Montreal...here I've compared it to a trellis in Rue Drummond, but it's not a great match.

http://www.lemontiger.co.uk/images/misc/thesecret/image3/trellis.jpg

These were the other image matches that originally got me interested in Percy Walters Park...

...but the check pattern could also something else like the Eaton Shopping Centre...

....also wondered about these lights at Place Ville Marie...

Re: Unsolved 1982 Montreal treasure hunt

High-resolution copies of the images can be found here...

http://www.bunnyears.net/misc/secret.zip

The book's editor Sean Kelly was a Montrealer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Kelly_(writer)

Another of the casques was in Cleveland, where the artist came from. The image may contain a hidden reference to the latitude/longitude somewhere.

That fence panel idea in Percy Walters Park is the possibility that interests me most at the moment if someone wants to try digging or probing the ground there...http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png

"In the middle of twenty-one from end to end"...21 panels...

http://www.lemontiger.co.uk/images/misc/thesecret/verse6/panels.jpg

"At the place where jewels abound
Fifteen rows down to the ground"

Fifteen spikes...

It's right by that fence, I'm sure of it. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

Re: Unsolved 1982 Montreal treasure hunt

"Golden Square Mile" is a smsll neighbourhood of Montreal located next to the Mount Royal. Near Westmount. The richest place in Montreal: "where the jewels abound..."
